Butter dish

This Past November I found myself teaching a Buttah Dish class. This was a 4 week intensive focus on the butter dish. We discussed the function and style variations and investigated the many ways to use templates.

Going into these lessons I conducted my own investigation as I have seen and used a number of butter dishes in my day but up till this point I had never ventured to create my own. I have always been interested in the french crock style butter dish ever since I moved in with a family in Portland, OR who kept butter this way. A few years back my mom had asked me for one and I was not so inclined to create one then.

During the class students were able to explore either or both style butter dishes. This investigation focused on working with slabs and creation of templates, Some students used sprig molds and decals to decorate while others chose to create more sculptural forms. I elected to create the two samples to the left during this class using a foam mold for one dish and a classic slab build dish for the other.

As an added resource I create a little presentation for this class which can be viewed HERE.

Let me know what you think!
